From mentoring local elementary school children to volunteering at the local Boys and Girls Club, Gamma Phi Betas love to lend a helping hand. Philanthropy is very important to Gamma Phi Beta. Our national philanthropy, Girls On The Run, is one of the nations leading developmental organizations, which focuses on building strong girls in our communities. Our sorority also actively supports the Clute Barrow Nelson Life Foundation, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Relay for Life and Chip’s Nation.
Each fall, our chapter holds an annual Chili Cook-Off where sororities, fraternities, families and other community organizations compete to make the best chili. In 2013, we had over 45 teams compete for prizes like tickets to Justin Timberlake’s concert in Atlanta and raised over $6,000. Our judges are always “campus celebrities” such as players from the UGA football team, members of the UGA Miracle Executive Board and several other campus organizations.
Every spring, our chapter hosts Crescent Classic, where students from campus and Athens locals can come to our house for great food and live music! This past year the event was catered by Your Pie, a local Pizzeria in Athens. Your Pie brought one of their ovens to our house so that everyone could make their own pizza and salad and have all you can eat gelato!
Throughout the year, Gamma Phi Betas participate in numerous other activities and philanthropies that raise money for many local and national charities. In 2013, Delta Upsilon contributed over $24,000 to the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta through UGA Miracle and was one of the top four fundraising organizations for the cause.
In support of Girls on the Run, many of our members are running buddies and mentors within the program. We also go to several races to support our girls by running with them, making them running goody bags and cheering them on!
Ranging from ATO’s Tau Tug to using our angelic voices in Beta’s Choral Cup and other various competitions, we love to support our fellow Greek and on campus organizations in their philanthropic endeavors. In 2013, our girls used their dance moves and placed third in the highly competitive Greek Grind, which supports Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA).
Gamma Phi not only actively participates in a wide variety of philanthropies but many also serve in leadership roles within the organizations. For 2014, Gamma Phi has at least one member on the Executive Board for organizations such as UGA Miracle, UGA Heros, UGA Special Olympics, Lunchbox Garden Club (a Gamma Phi is also the founder!) and VolunteerUGA among many others.
